You may think that you don’t need one, but trust me you do. Even a really careful biker will crash about every 4,000 miles.

How many people die each year as the result of an accident on their bike? Too many, that’s what. Over 1,200 people die in the US each year in a bicycle accident. What’s worse, most of those deaths are the result of an injury to the head. All of these head injury deaths could be prevented with the use of a helmet. Even kids don’t use helmets, as an estimated 75% of children do not wear helmets. Come on now, I don’t know if it’s the “cool factor” or what, but it certainly isn’t for lack of cheap prices. Helmets are certainly not expensive, and many go for about ten bucks.

It’s more than just price though, because helmets don’t really differ that much in quality according to price. Its really the helmets fit and design that matter. If the helmet is nice and snug, level and it is stable then that’s an indicator of a good helmet for you. The straps should adjust properly and be snug to prevent the helmet from shifting around. These are all facts from the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. The helmet should lie low on your head, just above the ears and it has to be comfortable. You must also look at the helmets design, and I am not just talking about how it looks. Helmets are designed differently for different areas. Some helmets are for street use, or off road use, mountains.. etc.

All major helmets are designed to meet the standards, and can withstand an impact from a 2 meter drop. Some brand names are better known for their quality and long standing performance like the Citi, the Slant, and the Boomerang toddler. These helmets have been industry leaders for many decades. While it may seem odd, helmets do in fact go bad. It’s important to change your helmet after a crash, and after you have been using it for a while because of the damage it gets from moisture and from the sun.

You’re always going to need to use your helmet, wherever you go. Even falling down at a low speed can get you into big trouble if you are not wearing a helmet. Another good thing to think about is to pick a noticeable color like white or a bright color so that those driving can see you.

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you, but lets get down to why bike rising is good for you. Biking is the type of exercise that will get your heart racing; it is a cardiovascular exercise that is going to improve your overall fitness and stamina. Bikers get the benefit that runners get without the stress on the joints. If you have ever been a runner, you know that a lot of stress is placed specifically on the knees… Check your bike seat to make sure that it is high up and allows your legs full range of motion so that you can get better circulation and a better workout with less stress on your joints.

It probably goes without saying; biking will get those legs of yours into the best shape of their lives. It’s going to increase your balance, which is truthfully at the heart of your core, and your abdominal region. Nowadays, everyone wants great abs, and what a better way to do it then to go biking. Biking will tighten those muscles in your abdominal region. Having tight abdominal muscles will also help your back out believe it or not. You will experience less back pain if you have a nice strong core. Those who are avid cyclers will reduce there risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) , and diabetes. Cycling will give your heart, lungs, and blood vessels a good workout…

It also goes without saying that exercise of any kind will relieve stress. What a better way to do it then to bike your way through the stress? You can bike inside and outside, tv on or tv off … with or without your family and friends. Cycling is one of those things that pretty much everyone can do. Taking your bike out for a spin, you can also run a few errands … or bike to work if it is within reasonable distance.

Just make sure that you take good care of your fitness pal. This way, you are as safe as can be while you are out there getting some nice exercise.
